Save Internet Radio

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I just realized why I have had issues listening to streaming radio today. It’s their Day of Silence.

Details:

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). To protest these rates and encourage the millions of net radio listeners to take action and contact their Congressional representatives, today is a national Day of Silence. Webcasters across the country have dedicated this day to increasing awareness of this looming threat and gathering support for the SaveNetRadio collation and our campaign to preserve music diversity on-line. For an updated list of the participants in this national day of silence, visit http://www.kurthanson.com/dos/. Net radio listeners, please excuse the interruption of your normal programming and take action to ensure this silence is not permanent. Call your Congressional Representatives today.

Even if you don’t listen to streaming radio, you should fight this. The Music companies are out of hand — It’s time we start fighting back, and put them in check.

My Week With Florida’s Nature

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I have had a hell of a week experiencing ‘Nature’ in Florida. I sorta forgot that we have so much to offer here, and we continue to pave over it. It’s really kinda sad.

I saw my first wild Florida black bear. Yup, Florida has Bears. Her and her cubs were just chilling my buddy Steve’s back yard. It was really unreal.

I started fishing again. I have been Hobbyless for the last 3-4 months, and I could tell that it was starting to get to me. So, I dusted off my ol’ rod and reel and hit the lake out in front of my house. Last night I caught 8 Bass in less than an hour ranging from 2-5lbs. These fish are really healthy and strong — and a blast on Light Tackle. I’m going to give this lake a rest for a few days — And check out a secret spot in Avalon tonight. Muhahah!

I got busted for fishing without a license. Yup. I thought in Florida you only needed a License to fish from a boat, not from land… This is only true for Saltwater… (This is an old Tourist Law, and after thinking about it, it needs to be changed) — Mad Props to the Florida Fish and Wildlife guys out patrolling and checking. After seeing how well they are keeping my local lakes I’m more than happy to give them my 12$. In fact, if you have an extra 12$ laying around, head over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website and pick up a fishing license. The money goes right back into protecting out wildlife.

So, if anyone wants to go fishing, drop me an email… I’m looking to do some light tackle inshore fishing this weekend.

STS-117 ala Avalon Park, Florida

Monday, June 11th, 2007

While unwinding Friday Night at the Avalon Park Beef o’ Brady’s — The Space shuttle went up. Whats cool is, for Central Floridians, the space shuttle going up still makes us as excited as children on Christmas morning. Everyone starts running outside yelling “IT’s GOING! IT’S GOING!” — And then we all argue about where to look…

However, the quote of the week goes to someone at the bar…. “Lets See al-qaeda do THAT!” — It was oddly patriotic. Yet Acceptable for the moment.

Understanding Search Engines (basics)

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

I have the privilege in my day job to see the thought process of search engines on very, very, very large scales. We spend hours studying logs, page ranks, statistical software, and even other websites to see why they do/don’t show up and search engines and what we can do better to win the game.

That’s right. SEO is a game. And we love it. The rules are always changing, and the players are always getting smarter — Being able to stay a step ahead of them makes us “winners” in our own weird geek ways.

But most people (99.99999% of my friends) don’t need this level of in depth analysis for basic SEO return. They just need the basics. They just want their blog to show up for their name, or have their small business have a fighting chance in local searches. So, last night, while having this conversation with a close friend of mine, I came up with what I call the “Four C’s of SEO Basics” — (Leave comments if you have ideas to expand the Basic “C’s”)

  • Content: Make sure the site/page that you’re trying to get traffic to has textual content in it. I see so many small business websites that have images for their address / phone numbers. This is a huge non-no. In this case (and because of who I had the discussion with — I’ll use This link for an example.
  • Context: Just get one contextual link to your website (Not on your website). That’s all it takes. Google / Yahoo / Etc. Need to know where to find you, and what you’re about.

Example — Bad: Random Link Good: Kyle Platt’s Resume

  • Container: Try to find a site that can surround the word with topical content. If you can’t find one, then try to use words around it that will give the link minor relevance.

Example: Kyle Platt Is a brilliant aerospace engineer based out of Orlando, Florida.

  • Consistency: Be consistent about placing the link around the Internet as often as you can. Slow and steady wins the race, and the long term effects will be increased relevance over time. Use relevant context when you add it, and switch up your ‘container’. If Search engines see the same one over and over, they will discount the value of the link.

Now, this is an absolute drop in the bucket of the SEO game. But, if you follow these basics in the long run, it’ll be a hell of a start.

I was sneezed on…

Monday, June 4th, 2007

I went to go see pirates of the caribbean this weekend. I’m not even going to bother capitalizing the movie name.. It was that horrible.. Disney should be ashamed that they, for lack of a better term, stole 20$ from me. (and that doesn’t even count snacks and soda) — So, Disney, Please feel free to email me, and I’ll send you my address for my refund.

Further more, the lady who was sitting behind me, decided to sneeze on me during the movie. And I’m not talking about me getting a lil over splash for a hand cover gone wrong… This was a no cover, full force, soaking the back of my head spray down from the blow hole of this savage beast. I’m just curious if she worked for Disney to give people something to talk about besides how crappy this movie was…
