My Favorite Metal? Steal….

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Going green in the new hip thing. Buy organic… Buy products made from renewable resources… Get an eco friendly car… Turn off your Lights… Recycle… Blah.. Blah.. Blah..

But when trends like this hit, it always make me suspicious of what the true driving factor is. Do Americans really love the earth so much that they are willing to separate their garbage and spend more money on every day products? It’s happening, I clearly can see that more people recycle now than ever before. Come Tuesday, my neighborhood has more green and orange recycling bins out than trash cans. And my local Mega-Marts are carrying more natural and eco friendly products. Some of which I have adopted. — Regardless, what ever the driving factor is, it’s working.

Then today I saw this story about thieves in Washington DC robbing the city blind of its metals. People having their gutters stolen. Bleachers having their seats taken. Even people stealing the exhausts off of cars — To help fuel the rising demand for recycled metals. Interesting. Huh.

This reminded me of a story I read a year back. After the hurricanes in Florida, groups of workers were going house to house and removing collapsed screen enclosures for free… Free? Yup. Because the aluminum that made up these structures was fetching $1000’s of dollars at the recyclers. Some say tragidity shows how generous Americans are, which isn’t totally untrue, but I think the common dollar might be a larger influence.

So, I’m curious about how long it’ll be until people start beating the County recycler to the bins. Someone is making money off of us. Perhaps it’s not enough to break even — But after much searching, I can’t find any recent statistics adjusted for the new trends and metal prices… — So who knows? Are we being played? Or do we really just care about our environment?

Christmas in July…

Monday, July 9th, 2007

In the last two months, I have found myself in the Local Hallmark store — Almost weekly. Between birthdays, Anniversaries, engagements, and thank-you cards it really is a savior to just walk in and get what you need. (Plus their new musical cards are really creative and well done). The other reason I like going to Hallmark stores, is they really do hire the nicest people on the face of the earth. Like, almost — You want to shake the *!@$ing Happiness out of them — Type happy.

Well, That being said, I’m now officially Boycotting Hallmark until Thanksgiving day. Hallmark is premiering their 2007 Christmas Ornaments in July. Just 14th - 15th to be exact. I’m sorry, but this absolutely asinine. The “Christmas Season” is from Thanksgiving until January first. That is the acceptable length of time for corporate America to milk this holiday. Every year it gets earlier — And people really need to start making a stand. Last year I boycotted my local Lowes for putting out Christmas Decorations in September. This year, Hallmark gets the prize. (Which is good, I love Lowes way too much to boycott it.)

Also, Mad Props to ‘Julie’ at the Waterford Lakes Home Depot this weekend. She went 2-for-2 on helping me find some super random items. And did it by approaching me and asking me if I needed help — What can I say, the ladies love the Banging Hair… ;)

Best Philly Cheesesteak In Orlando

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

It’s about freaking time — Avalon Park finally has a restaurant worthy of ‘Going out of your way’ for. Up until now we have been peppered with run-of-the-mill dining establishments, that there was no reason to goto except that they were close, and usually don’t have much of a wait. Enter Briantos Hoagie shop. Thats right, this isn’t some run of the mill sub ship, this is a hoagie shop… And I will say, hands down, has the best Philly cheese steak I have had in Orlando. (And trust me, I have had a lot of Philly’s in my day).

And if you are ever in East Orlando, take the trek down to Avalon — and stop by Briantos — It’s worth the extra 20mins drive… And if you live in Avalon, You better get your ass over there — Because if they go out of Business, I will hold every Avalonian responsible, and personally make sure that my dogs crap in your yard.

Note: Because the website is a lil… Well.. ‘Not Done’.. Here is a link to where Briantos is at… Map to Briantos in Avalon Park.

Happy (belated) Birthday America!

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Happy Birthday America! How does it feel to be a year older? Hope you got my present back on April 15th… I haven’t really seen a Thank you note for it, but I think that might be a good things.

I really do hope you enjoyed the anarchist display of fire all of your friends and family provided for you — Of course, some displays were better than others… But in the end our goal was clear — To show you how much we love you.

Orlando Drivers

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

It’s not that Orlando (Or Florida In General) has the worst drivers in America, we just have the most impolite drivers.

This weekend, while running some errands, I came to a four way stop @ Waterford Lakes town center. Four way stops freak the hell out of Floridians — Because they don’t know the rules. People don’t know who goes first, and the sheer importance of having your turn signal on. So there is a lot of hesitation, and gas slamming when someone decides to “Just Go For It” … Not to mention, Cars that are second in line who bumper hug the cars in front of them to avoid their turn in the “Cycle”… The whole thing is a mess..

This weekend, Some dude raced out in front of me — Forcing me to tap my brakes, and wait for him to clear the intersection so I could keep on going. No harm, just very rude. So as I drove by him I waved my finger in a “No-No” motion and lipped, “Not your turn…” — This of course, enraged the guy — Who was more than happy to wave a finger back at me while his friend in the passenger seat repeatedly said “Want me to roll down the Window? Want me to roll down the Window?”

I was probably out of line for what I did. I pride myself in being a polite driver — Even going as far as rolling down my window in the rain to wave at people for letting me in/out. I was taught how to drive by Pittsburgh’ers, which are arguably the nicest drives on the face of the earth. They know their roads are narrow, bumpy, and contain lots of blind turns and hills. If you’re not polite, you’re dead. That mantra is not taught here. It’s more of a every man for their selves — And it’s getting out of hand, and dangerous.

Well, starting today I’m going back to being 100% Polite driver, and to start, I’m putting a Pittsburgh Steelers sticker on my truck. It’ll me my sign that any time someone lets me out, They’re guaranteed a wave and a smile. As for people who pull No-No’s around me, just going to ignore them. I figure natural selection will wrap them around a telephone pole — and that might finally teach them a lesson. Hopefully for the guy in the Black Infiniti Q45 that pulled out in front of me, the kids that were in the backseat decide to finally put on their seat belts. I’d hate to see them get hurt because he decided to take more risk. I mean he pulled out in front of my 5,000lb truck — How could that possibly end badly?
