Home Depot Goes Social…

Home Depot Going Social

Dear Home Depot.. You might as well add MySpace and Facebook widgets to your site. I’m not sure why you stopped at Slashdot. If the nerds of the Internet would like to read about a Laminate Sale, why wouldn’t thirteen year old girls and sexual deviants? Or is their money no good to you?

This is more proof of the absolute flawed model of (and eminent fall) of social networking/linking sites. The simple absolute misunderstanding of their use is being jaded by the traffic success stories many sites have had. Think about it, why the hell would anyone EVER Digg or Slashdot laminate flooring — or anything at home depot for that matter — is way beyond me. (Note: I do understand the Google Bookmarks and Yahoo My web links. Those could definitely be useful for the consumer.)

I stopped using most of those sites a while ago — And I think I finally understand why. The power of the community has been advertised to the power of corporations. I’m sure it is flattering to these sites that someone like Home Depot would add them, but anyone that uses them to socialize “laminate flooring” is really just pooping in the pool that was once the useful creative Internet.
